CamTEFL

Cambodian Rural Development Team, CRDT and Conversation with Foreigners, CWF

CRDT is a local NGO registered with the Ministry of Interior that bridges the gap between sustainable rural development and conservation to prevent further degradation of Cambodia’s natural heritage.

CRDT was formed in 2001 and has been working in collaboration with international and local conservation organisations, as well a s awide range of government agencies to deliver community and rural development to over 100 families in support of conservation of critically endangered Mekong River Irrawaddy Dolphins in Kratie and Stung Treng and the protection of tropical forest biodiversity in Mondulkiri.

CRDT field staff live, eat and work in the villages where projects are being implemented. They are usually young, university educated Cambodians from rural backgrounds with a desire to affect change in their communities. CRDT has raised funds important funds for these various projects but it is far more difficult to raise core funds. These are important as they include the money necessary to provide medical and emergency evacuation insurance for field staff who are often living and working in isolated communities lacking sanitation.

Conversation With Foreigners, (CWF) was formed with this express purpose in 2006. CWF recruits volunteers to conduct much needed English conversation classes for local students in Phnom Penh. These students pay $30 per 10 week semester for daily classes. This price has been set at an affordable level to ensure the service benefits as many Cambodians as possible. To date the school has established an impressive reputation and is proving very popular with demand for places far outstripping the number of volunteer teachers that can be recruited. The school is teaching over 300 students every day. CWF has:-

  • recruited over 60 volunteer teachers.
  • Raised $6,800 for CRDT.

A letter of thanks for these funds from CRDT.

CamTEFL support s CWF as a stand alone provider of English education in Phnom Penh. Attracting and training people who want to teach English is a logical way of strengthening CWF by boosting quality and recruitment. Being a not for profit prganisation allows CamTEFL to cut costs for the TEFL while at the same time ensuring the quality and marketability of the training. All profits from CamTEFL are donated to CRDT.
