CamTEFL Course in Detail

The CamTEFL course takes participants with no formal preparation in teaching. It offers a robust and proven training package which is particular supportive of working with individual strengths. This is an important aspect as intensive TEFL training can be stressful for people. We recognise that each person will develop into a unique teacher and are especially flexible as a training facility. It is an ideal choice for participants considering a career change.

It equips the participants to teach with limited access to resources, focusing mainly on speaking and listening skills, and teaches people through predominantly oral techniques. There is no one methodology taught: course participants are exposed to a variety of widely recognised teaching approaches in the industry today, based on relevant theories on second language acquisition (generally within humanistic and communicative approaches). They are trained through learner-centred principles and techniques, and likewise, are expected to teach using learner-centred means.

The 120 hour course is taught over a 4 week period after an orientation week to allow trainees time to settle in Cambodia. Course participants practice teaching within an existing English programme in the Phnom Penh community. The course content is delivered through daily input sessions and trainees are provided with feedback from their peers and experienced trainers.

Course Objectives    At the end of the course the trainees will be able to:
 Understand and apply language learning theories when designing lessons
 Use appropriate teaching strategies according to course and students’ needs
 Use curricula to enhance language learning
 Plan class activities using a variety of published, and self-made resources.
 Evaluate student’s achievements using varied strategies.

Selection

Candidates will undergo a phone interview before being admitted as a trainee. Attitude and motivation play a more important a role in selection than confidence in dealing with grammar. We expect candidates to be respect the local culture and be sensitive to the needs of their students. We are happy to consider candidates for whom English is not their first language provided they speak and write fluently. A workbook of activities and a reading list are sent out prior to the start of the course.  This is to set expectations, start the process of learning to teach and ease fears about lack of knowledge of grammar.

TEFL certificate requirements

Full TEFL certificates are awarded to participants completing the course, fulfilling the following:-

  1. Input sessions 26 hours.
  2. Practice teaching (assessed by tutor) to include a 1:1 session 6-9 hours.
  3. Feedback to lessons 19 hours.
  4. Lesson planning with tutor support 36 hours.
  5. Observation of experienced teachers  8 hours.
  6. Observation and evaluation of peers 27 hours.
  7. Weekly 1:1 progress tutorials 80 minutes

Course Requirements and Assessment

Although there are no formal examinations, there are three written assignments.  100% attendance of input and teaching practice is required.  Assessment is overall and continuous, with weekly 1:1 progress tutorials with trainers to enable a clear understanding of progress, the assessment criteria and to devise an appropriate action plan.  Overall satisfactory performance in teaching practice is required for successful completion.  A portfolio containing all course work is submitted at the end of the course and maintained at the training centre.

Final Certification

  • Trainees will be not be awarded a certificate if they fail to treat students and trainers with respect or fail to fullfill all the course requirements listed above
  • A certificate of attendence will be awarded to trainees who complete the course requiremnets but need considerable support to produce lessons to standard.
  • A pass certificate will be awarded to trainees who complete the course requiremets and demonstrate potential and determination and would benefit from more support and more experience.
  • A pass B certificate will be awarded to trainees who in addition to the criteria necessary for a pass have demonstrated a clearer understanding and application of teaching and learning theories and would require less support in the future.
  • A pass A certificate will be awaded in exceptional circumstances to trainees who in addition to the criteria necessary for a pass B have demonstrated a high level of understanding and application of teaching and learning theories and would be capable of teaching with mininimal support.

TEFL Course participant profile

Participants in the CamTEFL course in Phnom Penh will include a wide range of people, of different ages from many countries. While the course is geared for participants with no experience, the programme will attract career changers and even teachers with experience and qualifications wanting to retrain or sharpen their skills

Scholarships will be awarded to Cambodian Nationals where there is a strong possibility that their training will positively impact on EFL teaching and learning to the benefit of Cambodia

The maximum number of course participants is 12. Courses can run with 4 participants however it is likely that there will be one trainer  rather than two and just one teaching practice class.
